Wood has a soul. Every piece of driftwood, every ship's plank that the wind and the waves wash ashore in stormy winter days, has it's secret. Where does the wood come from? What happened to it in time? How many years or even decades did it drift in the sea? Driftwood is something special, because it keeps the secret of it's origin, so that you can imagine your one stories. These pieces of wood let us dream away and travel with our minds.
My driftwood is collected at the beaches from Southern Crete. I look for pieces with a special shape or a unique grain, sometimes there are also pieces with entwined roots or stones included. But every piece of wood is special and unique - like my work. From driftwood I create handmade furnishings and decoration stuff like candle and wine holders, frames, clocks, lamps, mirrors and sailing boats. I use also wood from traditional old Cretan houses like old windows and doors or wooden fish boxes. Important for my work is to keep the special character and the grain of the wood. I usually don't paint my pieces in different colours - I think, the wood itself should be the center of attention.
